An 80th Anniversary Tribute to the First Feature to Use Talking Sequences and It’s Star

Friday, October 5th through Sunday, October 7th, 2007

 On October 6th, 1927, the first motion picture that featured talking sequences, The Jazz Singer starring AL JOLSON premiered in New York City . Movie history was made as the silent era was over and sound was here to stay. Please join us as we celebrate this milestone in film history with a weekend-long tribute to the film and the man who starred in it.

Followed by a panel discussion and rare screening of the 1926 Vitaphone short subject: “AL JOLSON IN A PLANTATION ACT”.

From the Vitaphone Project:

 Ron Hutchinson (Head of The Vitaphone Project)

John Newton (Record collector/historian and owner of the sound disc to"A Plantation Act", used for the restoration.)

Jim Cooprider (Alchemist who repaired the sound disc for Plantation Act)

 Brad Kay - jazz musician and historian, who chronicled the saga of the Plantation Act's finding and restoration

 Herbert Goldman, author Of Jolson: The Legend Comes to Life

 Bob Gitt, Preservation Officer, UCLA Film Archives

And other special surprises!

2) Cherokee Street Parking Structure

Located on Cherokee Street, around the corner from Hollywood Boulevard, kittycorner to Las Palmas and the Egyptian Theatre block, across from famed Musso and Frank's Grill
